The green beer has stopped flowing, the parades have ended, and the Irish music has faded. But if you woke up today with feet that feel like they have been through a marathon, you are not alone. Whether you spent the holiday standing on hard pavement for hours or dancing a bit too much in shoes that were more stylish than supportive, your feet and ankles are likely paying the price.
In this article, we at Podiatry Center of New Jersey are bringing you some lucky post-party tips for pain relief.
Cool Down the Inflammation
The first thing you should do for your aching feet is address inflammation. If your ankles are puffy or your arches are throbbing, reach for a cold pack instead of a heating pad. Cold therapy constricts blood vessels and helps reduce the swelling that occurs after a long day of standing.
Rehydrate and Flush Your System
If you indulged in salty corned beef or a few festive drinks, your body is likely holding onto excess fluid. This often manifests as swelling in your ankles and feet, which makes your favorite sneakers feel tight.
To fix this, you need to drink more water than usual. While it sounds counterintuitive to drink more when you feel waterlogged, hydration helps your kidneys flush out the sodium and uric acid that lead to swelling and gout.
For an extra boost, reach for foods high in potassium, like avocados or bananas, to help balance out your electrolyte levels and prevent those agonizing post-party calf cramps.
Slip into Comfy Shoes
The shoes you wore to the celebration might have looked great with your green outfit, but they probably lacked the structural support your feet actually need. Today is the day to swap those flats, boots, or heels for high-quality footwear.
This allows your tendons to recover without being strained further. If you have custom orthotics, make sure you are wearing them today, even if you are just walking around the house.
Inspect for Holiday Wear and Tear
Finally, take a close look at your skin. Check for blisters, red spots, or small cuts you might have missed during the festivities. For those with diabetes, this step is critical because a small rub from a shoe can go undetected.
By taking these small steps today, you can prevent your holiday-stressed feet from getting into a long-term injury. But, if you’re not feeling right and need a podiatrist’s opinion, we’ll always be here!
