Back-to-school season brings more than new classes and homework. Kids are suddenly carrying backpacks, spending hours on their feet, navigating crowded hallways, and returning to PE classes and fall sports. All that activity can take a toll on growing feet and ankles.

At Podiatry Center of New Jersey, our pediatric podiatry team helps children and teens manage foot pain, sports injuries, gait concerns, and other common problems.

Keep Backpacks Manageable

A backpack that is too heavy can make a child lean forward or adjust their posture to carry the load. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that backpacks weigh no more than 15% of a child’s body weight. Encourage kids to use both shoulder straps, remove unnecessary items, and speak up if carrying their backpack causes discomfort.

Start With Properly Fitting Shoes

Children’s feet grow quickly, which means last semester’s shoes may no longer fit comfortably. Shoes that are too tight can contribute to blisters, calluses, and irritation, while worn-out shoes may not provide enough support during the school day.

Before buying a new pair, check the fit and consider how the shoes will be used. Our previous blog on ranking back-to-school shoes for kids offers additional guidance for choosing footwear.

Prepare Kids’ Feet for PE and Sports

Running, jumping, and quick changes in direction can put extra stress on the feet and ankles, especially after a less-active summer. Help reduce the risk of injuries by encouraging kids to:

  • Wear athletic shoes appropriate for the activity
  • Warm up before PE or sports
  • Increase activity gradually
  • Speak up about pain instead of playing through it

Ankle sprains are common sports injuries, and proper treatment is important if one occurs. Parents can also review these back-to-school activity tips for additional ways to prepare children’s feet for the school year.

Pay Attention to Ongoing Foot Pain

Occasional tired feet after an active day can happen, but recurring pain, swelling, limping, or changes in the way your child walks deserve attention. A podiatrist can evaluate the cause and recommend treatment based on your child’s needs.

A little back-to-school foot care can help keep kids comfortable from the classroom to PE class, the playground, and after-school sports. For more foot-related advice, contact the expert team at Podiatry Center of New Jersey. Give us a call at (973) 925-4111 or make an appointment online.
