If you’ve ever felt like you’re walking on a pebble or experienced burning pain between your toes, you may be dealing with Morton’s neuroma. This common foot condition affects the tissue surrounding a nerve in the ball of the foot, often causing discomfort that worsens with walking or wearing certain shoes.
At Podiatry Center of New Jersey, we help patients identify the cause of forefoot pain and recommend treatments that relieve symptoms and improve mobility. One of the most common questions we hear is whether Morton’s neuroma will simply go away on its own.
What Is Morton’s Neuroma?
Despite its name, Morton’s neuroma isn’t actually a tumor. It’s a thickening of the tissue surrounding a nerve, most commonly located between the third and fourth toes. As the nerve becomes irritated, it can cause pain, tingling, numbness, or the sensation that something is bunched up inside your shoe.
Can It Heal Without Treatment?
In its early stages, mild symptoms may improve if you reduce activities that aggravate the nerve and switch to shoes with a wider toe box. However, the underlying irritation often remains. Without addressing the cause, symptoms frequently return and may become more severe over time.
Ignoring ongoing pain can allow the nerve irritation to worsen, making conservative treatment less effective later.
Treatment Options
Fortunately, many cases of Morton’s neuroma can be managed without surgery. Depending on your symptoms, your podiatrist may recommend:
- Shoes with a wide toe box and good support
- Custom orthotics to reduce pressure on the affected nerve
- Activity modifications
- Anti-inflammatory treatments
- Padding or metatarsal pads to relieve pressure
- In some cases, corticosteroid injections or other advanced treatments
Early treatment often provides the best opportunity to relieve pain and prevent the condition from progressing.
