Noticing a lump on the top of your foot can be concerning. Some foot lumps are harmless, but the cause is not always obvious from appearance alone. Below, the podiatrists at Podiatry Center of New Jersey explain several possible causes and when a new or changing lump should be examined.
What Is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops near a joint or tendon sheath. It commonly forms on the top of the foot and may feel soft, firm, or slightly movable beneath the skin. The cyst may change size over time or temporarily disappear and return.
A ganglion cyst may cause no discomfort. However, pressure from shoes or contact with a nearby nerve can lead to:
- Aching or tenderness
- Tingling, burning, or numbness
- Irritation while walking
- Difficulty wearing certain shoes
Why Do Bone Spurs Form on the Foot?
A hard, fixed bump may be a bone spur, also called an osteophyte. Bone spurs can develop near a joint in response to ongoing pressure, friction, arthritis, or changes in how the foot moves. When a spur forms on top of the foot, shoe pressure may irritate the skin and surrounding tissues.
The bump itself may not hurt, but inflammation around it can make walking or wearing closed-toe shoes uncomfortable.
Can an Irritated Joint Cause a Lump?
Swelling around an inflamed or arthritic joint may create the appearance of a lump. Tendon irritation, a recent injury, or repeated pressure from footwear can also cause localized swelling on top of the foot.
Because cysts, bone growths, and soft-tissue swelling may look similar, it is important not to diagnose or attempt to drain a lump at home.
When Should a Foot Lump Be Examined?
Schedule a podiatry appointment if the lump is painful, growing, changing color, returning after treatment, or causing numbness or difficulty walking. A podiatrist can assess the lump’s location, texture, and mobility. X-rays may help identify a bone spur or joint problem, while ultrasound or other imaging may be recommended for a soft-tissue mass.
